Varicose veins and «spider veins» are not just an aesthetic problem. It is a question of health that, in part, can be prevented.

This pathology is caused by family predisposition plus the addition of some favorable factors such as obesity, sedentary lifestyle, use of oral contraceptives, pregnancy or increased blood clotting.

The Argentine phlebologist and researcher Miguel Ángel Gramajo Booth pointed out a series of key numbers to keep in mind to keep the legs healthy:

– 1 hour: the measure of time to which special attention should be paid. Many times the work requires to remain still in the same position. After this period, you should remember to take short walks to move your legs.

– 2 liters of water (minimum): drinking this amount is essential to hydrate and preserve the complete harmony of the body.

– 4 very healthy meals: maintaining a balanced diet is essential to control weight and avoid constipation. The slogan is to eat a diet low in calories and high in fiber: fruits and vegetables should abound in all dishes.

– 5 minutes of rest: whenever possible, it is very beneficial to lie down and put your legs up. This position is excellent to favor venous return.

– 10 minutes of self-massage: the technique is very simple. Massages should be done ascending, from the feet to reach (very slowly) the thighs. The three fundamental tips: not apply directly on the varicose veins but in the surrounding areas, take care that the movements are smooth (use the palms and fingers in their entirety instead of pressing with the yolks) and use creams or oils to avoid friction. This allows the blood accumulated in the veins to begin to move and flow to the heart.

– 30 minutes of exercises: no big efforts; a simple walk is enough to strengthen the muscles of the legs and promote return circulation. Dancing, running, cycling, swimming, gymnastics are other excellent options.

– 45 degrees: the perfect angle to tilt the legs and rest.
